Shop Fabricated Steel Recreation Bridges

Wheeler’s steel bridges are ideal for recreation and low-volume vehicular bridge applications. We offer a wide range of bridge types, including parallel chord, bowstring and modified bowstring. All of our bridges are fabricated in our AISC certified facility.

Installation Ready

The bridges are shop fabricated in the largest sections we can ship, often the complete bridge. Lift off the truck and ready to set. Limited field assembly for most projects.

Spans 20’ to 250’

Typical designs allow for clear spans from 20 to 200 feet. Under certain conditions special designs can extend spans to 250 feet. Bridges can be in single or multiple-span configurations.

Clear spans up to 120 feet can be fabricated and shipped as one piece if contractor capabilities and site considerations allow. Longer spans are built with field bolted splices and shipped as multiple sections.

Widths 4’ to 14’

Widths less than six feet should only be considered for shorter spans. Bridges wider than twelve feet (clear between the railing) may require a longitudinal field splice, increasing the installed cost.

Applications

  • Regional hiking/biking/equestrian trails
  • Community parks
  • Pedestrian overpasses
  • Snowmobile routes
  • Golf courses
  • Single lane residential access
  • Typical loads, such as pedestrian, equestrian and maintenance vehicles
  • Utility dead loads can be accommodated

Parallel Chord & Portal

The parallel chord is the most popular truss choice. It features parallel top and bottom chords with either Pratt diagonals slanting toward the center of the span separated by verticals or Warren (W pattern) diagonals with or without verticals. Portal (overhead) bracing is used for longer spans or bridges that are fully enclosed.

Bowstring

The bowstring is often chosen for its unique architectural design, especially when used as a focal point. The top chord bends down to meet the deck at the ends of the span. The bottom chord is near flat.

Modified Bowstring

The modified bowstring is an affordable alternative to the parallel chord. Available for most span lengths, it features a top chord that’s arched relative to the bottom and meets the end post near the railing height.

Finishing Details

No bridge is complete without the finishing details. Most bridges start with weathering steel but can be finished with paint if desired. We also provide decking, railing and accessory options to complete your project.

Shipping & Installation

Bridges are shipped to the site using independent carriers with over-the-road trucks. Spans up to 80’ are typically shipped as a single unit unless requested as multiple sections at the time of order. Spans 80’ to 120’ will be reviewed to determine if they ship as a single unit or multiple sections. Spans greater than 120’ will ship in sections.

Plans include lifting weights and detailed written instruction for proper pick points and splicing (if required). Splices are field bolted.

All unloading and field installation is the responsibility of the contractor.

Urban parks offer an opportunity for accessories. Custom railing, signage, lighting, monuments can be incorporated into the bridge details.
